As most of you know, I love sports. I love watching sports (I.e. I woke up this morning at 5AM to watch the end of the Federer vs. Joker Australian Open Semifinal). I love playing sports (Basketball, tennis and golf are my top 3 right now.). I am typically the person who is recruiting and organizing the sporting event, whether it is golf on a Friday or one of our church basketball games (We are currently undefeated.). And my normal question to the guys is, “Who’s in?” “We have a game this Thursday night, who’s in?” And the guys typically respond, “Count me in!” or “I’m out.”
The third step in making Graystone Church your third place is committing to official church membership. Wow, that sounds so official. I actually debated 11 years ago when we started Graystone if we should even have official church membership. Church membership is not in the Bible. The early church in the book of Acts was so committed to each other that they didn’t have to make it official. If you were a follower of Jesus, you were a part of the church. And if you were a part of the church, your life was in danger. So yeah, they were pretty committed to the church and each other.
In our culture, people have a hard time committing to anything. People change jobs all the time. Student athletes change schools so they can compete for a state championship each year. And people change churches all the time. They are known as church shoppers and hoppers. This drives me crazy BTW but that’s another post for another day.
One of the reasons we have official church membership is it lets us know who is truly committed to Graystone Church. Who is on our team roster? Who can we count on? “We have a big game coming up on Sunday, who’s in?” “Count me in!”
Graystone’s next Newcomers Lunch (church membership class) is this Sunday, January 31 at 12:15PM. You can sign up online here.
