This is a series of post about making the local church, specifically Graystone, your THIRD PLACE. In the first post, I discussed the third place concept. The first step to make the local church your third place is to attend on Sundays. Make it a weekly habit. Build it into your schedule and routine. Commit to come.
The second step is not simply to attend but to ENGAGE. Get involved. Instead of just showing up, engage with others. Join a serving team. Find a job. Do it with friends. This is one of the easiest ways to get connected and get to know others.
Yes, the coffee ladies make and serve coffee. But they also hang out, talk, have fun, love and care for one another. They also slip me some of the fancy refrigerated creamer (French Vanilla is my favorite.) and sometimes even a cupcake from Special Kneads and Treats. Hey, a cupcake is simply a muffin with icing on it. It’s a perfectly acceptable breakfast food.
If you join the parking team, you are a part of an elite group of men who serve rain or shine, sleet or snow. They are our front line greeters and keep the parking lot safe. If you serve on the parking team at our Walton Campus, you will probably break bread together with an incredible biscuit from The Golden Pantry. I was tempted to eat one last Sunday, but I didn’t feel that I earned it. The parking team are rock stars. There have been talks of them modeling for a Graystone Parking Team Calendar, but I’m not sure if anything has come of it.
You could join the greeting TEAM, usher TEAM, tech TEAM, Student Ministry TEAM, Admin TEAM, Cleaning TEAM, Landscape TEAM, Children’s Ministry TEAM, etc. Talk about getting ENGAGED at church. I wasn’t speaking the first Sunday of the year, so I told Katie I could serve in the children’s area if she needed me. She put me in the 3 year old room as Angie Skinner’s assistant. Angie Skinner is a rock star and is another one of our incredible volunteers who pours into our kids. We had around 18 three year olds at the 9:30 service. I had a blast with them. The people who serve in the children’s area not only ENGAGE with the kids but with the children’s pastor and their fellow volunteers.
I was at the Walton Campus this past Sunday. Robby and Jennifer Farmer taught the 2 year olds at 9:30. Then Robby was greeting, passing out bulletins and ushering at the 11:00 service. ENGAGED! ENGAGED! ENGAGED! Unfortunately for us, he’s moving to Michigan soon. I said, “Dude, you are irreplaceable!”
We have dozens and dozens of people who are engaged at Graystone on Sundays. They are not slipping in and slipping out for one service. Graystone is their third place. Their family spends their Sunday mornings at Graystone. It’s really cool seeing entire families serving together in one service and worshipping together in another.
If you want to make Graystone (or any local church) your third place, don’t just attend, get ENGAGED! Join a volunteer TEAM. Get to know others and let them get to know you. Find your place service.
