In last Sunday’s message at Graystone Church (You can watch it here.), I shared that Jesus’ Temptation was a defining moments in His life. If the Devil has the guts to try and tempt Jesus, he’s got no problem trying to tempt you and me. We will all be tempted, and we need to be prepared for it.
I also shared that we are in a war, a spiritual battle. And Satan will do anything he can to take us out. He will attack us, our church, our families, our marriages and even our kids. He has a big target on pastors and their families. Each day, we need to put on the full armor of God and fight the battle with the truth of God’s word (Ephesians 6:10-17).
Last week, I asked one of my friends, Pastor Darrel Rewis, to share with our Graystone Staff Team about the 6 Schemes of Satan. Darrel preached a 6 week message series at his church (Of course, it had to be 6 weeks.), and I asked him to summarize it for our staff team. I think it was eye opening for our staff, and I thought it would be beneficial to you as well. Darrel opened his teaching explaining that “knowing is half the battle”. If we know Satan schemes and how he plans to attack us, we can better be prepared for battle.
6 Schemes of Satan
“…in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.” 2 Corinthians 2:11
1. To Deceive
This is Satan’s bread and butter “play”. He is a liar and the father of lies. It is who he is. A lie is the foundation of every other scheme. He will try and deceive us. He will try and put doubts in our minds. Our answer is to combat Satan’s lies with the truth of God’s word.
2. To Discredit
He is looking to cause missteps and immorality in our lives. He will try and turn our testimony into a tabloid. He wants to ruin our witness and take away our credibility. He is after our character and would love nothing more than to put us on the shelf for awhile.
3. To Distract
If he can’t get us to do something bad, he will try and distract us. He will even distract us with “good things” (i.e. family, sports, etc.)
4. To Divide
Satan will look to divide our hearts, our marriages, our families, our ministries and our church. And again, he does this with his lies. He will try and divide our church family with lies. Division discredits us.
5. To Discourage
If Satan cannot deceive, discredit, distract or divide us, he will try and discourage us. This is one of the main hazards in ministry. He wants us to give up, give in, lose heart, and lose all hope. Ultimately, he wants us to lay down and quit.
6. To Destroy
Satan is a murderer. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy (John 10:10a). He will try and destroy us at any means possible, even death.
Darrel’s message to our staff was on point and got everyone’s attention. This is not a game. We are in a war.
I reminded our staff that our struggle in not against flesh and blood (I.e. other people) but against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm (Ephesians 6:12). I also reminded them that the one who is in us is greater than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4). And the victory is ours in Christ Jesus our Lord.
