Parental Guidance (Part 2)

Follow God’s Will

Jonathan Howes, Lead Pastor

Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6

How to Guide Our Kids to Follow God’s Will:

  1. Guide them to follow God personally.

“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” John 17:3

Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23

  1. Guide them to follow God’s purpose.

Universal Purpose

Know God and make God known

 The Great Commandment:

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” Mark 12:30

The Great Commission:

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20

 Unique Purpose

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:13-14

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10

  1. Guide them to follow God’s plan.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

A. Know God’s word

“Your word is a lamp to my feet, a light for my path.” Psalm 119:105

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

B.  Hear God’s voice

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me…My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:14; 27

  1. Guide them to follow God’s people

“Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 11:1

  1. Guide them to follow God’s path.

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.  But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”   Matthew 7:13-14

  1. Show them the path.
  2. Lead the way.
  3. Walk with them.

What do we do if our kids get off the path?

  1. Love them no matter what.
  2. Give them as many onramps as possible to get back on the path.
  3. Take drastic measures if necessary.
  4. Don’t give up on your kids.
  5. Pray like crazy.

“Arise, cry out in the night, as the watches of the night begin; pour out your heart like water in the presence of the Lord. Lift up your hands to him for the lives of your children…” Lamentations 2:19
