For Further Study…

Here’s a little lagniappe from Sunday’s message at Graystone for those of you who like to study further:

1. Luke is the only gospel who records this story, Jesus’ Anointing by the Sinful Woman (Luke 7:36-50.)

2.  This is very similar the Jesus’ anointing in Bethany during Passion Week which is recorded in Matthew 26:6-13, Mark 14:3-9, and John 12:2-8, but it is an entirely different event.

3.  Mary Magdelene, sister of Martha and Lazarus, is the person who anoints Jesus with perfume during Passion Week to prepare for his burial.  She is not to be confused with the sinful woman, prostitute, in Luke 7:36-50.

4.  The account of the prostitute anointing Jesus’ feet takes place in Galilee.

5.  In order to see the true beauty of the story we need to read Matthew 11.  The 4 gospels help us understand the context of the story. Jesus was in Galilee teaching and preaching.  And he closes his sermon with Matthew 11:28, ““Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”  The prostitute was responding to Jesus’ invitation to come.  And his invitation is available to ALL, ANYONE, and EVERYONE.

If you missed the message or would like to watch it again, it should be available online Tuesday.  You can watch it here.

  1. Thanks Jonathan for this, enjoyed the message yesterday!! One of the things the pastor said at my Mom’s funeral several times was she “had the talk and also the walk” throughout her life. Yesterday really touched me, thanks for all the work you do to make your messages so heartfelt. Nealie
