Day of Power and Authority

As we discussed yesterday at Graystone, Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem takes place on Sunday, 4 days before the Passover Meal (The Last Supper) and 7 days before Resurrection Sunday (Easter).  After Jesus publicly declares himself as Messiah and King, he returns to Bethany to spend the night with His friends.  Then, on Monday, which is known as the “Day of Power and Authority”, he returns to Jerusalem to cleanse the temple by driving out the merchants and money changers (Mark 11:15-18; Luke 19:45-48; Matthew 21:12-13).  Jesus declares his sovereignty over the temple and this provokes the Jerusalem authorities to plot his death (Mark 11:18).

Today’s Bible Reading

Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it a ‘den of robbers.’” Matthew 21:12-13
