The Ghost (Week 1): The Person of the Holy Spirit

Yesterday, we kicked off week 1 of our new message series, The Ghost.  I taught from John 16:7-15 and John 14:16-17 and shared that the Holy Spirit is the 3rd person of the Trinity.  He dwells in the life of the believer (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) and will be with us forever.  He is the deposit guaranteeing our salvation in heaven (Ephesians 1:13-14).  The assurance that God’s spirit lives in us is our changed life (2 Corinthians 5:17) through Jesus Christ.

If God is living in us, the characteristics of Jesus will shine through us.  God’s purpose will be our purpose.  God’s desires will be our desires.  Our lives will be focused on the things of God (Colossians 3:1-4). And we will exemplify the  fruits of the spirit (Galatians 5:22-23): love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control.

God has sent the Holy Spirit to be our “parakeltos”…Counselor, Comforter, Helper.  Jesus said that it is for our good that He left the earth, so that God the Father could send us the Holy Spirit.  I shared 3 ways the Holy Spirit ministers to us:

1.  He convicts us.  His main work in our lives is to make us holy.  He is the Sanctifier…thus His name: the HOLY Spirit.

2. He counsels us.  He guides us into all truth (John 16:13).

3. He comforts us.

If you missed the message or would like to hear it again, you can watch it here.  It should be available online Tuesday.  I hope EVERYONE learned something new about the Holy Spirit and you are ready to learn more.  Next week’s message is titled: The Power of the Holy Spirit.

  1. Great service and sermon yesterday. Our small group really had some good questions and it was a profitable discussion yesterday evening. We had some first hand testimony of how the Holy Spirit works in our lives. How he encourages, teaches, and walks along side us. I’m not exactly sure who is preparing the questions for the community groups but he is doing a great job.

  2. Jonathan, I thought your analogy of taking on “your” personality and characteristics was just EXCELLENT!!! It makes it so easy to understand that if you are a child of God, you will act different and be different. (I also am impressed with the guy doing the questions!)

  3. I remember only too well when God filled me with his Holy Spitit. It was an experience that I shall never forget and at a critical time in my life as I faced that death of my husband. I use it in my testimony to others every chance I get. Just love that way the church looks with the veil of the Holy Spirit overhead — hope you plan on keeping it there. Great message, am looking forward to more!
