What are you living UNDER?

In this morning’s Daily Bible Reading/Quiet Time (Romans 3:9-18), a couple of words in verse 9 jumped out to me: UNDER SIN.  It says that we are all UNDER SIN.  Theologically speaking, we are all born into sin (Original Sin) and until we experience God’s grace through Jesus Christ, we are living under the bondage of sin and the law.

I think it is interesting that our nation’s founding fathers had a vision for us not to live UNDER SIN but to be free as “one nation under God”.  I think it is safe to say that we are not “one nation under God”.  It was a grand vision, but when the majority of our nation is living “under sin”, it is hard to live as “one nation under God”.  But let’s not get into politics this morning.  The real issue is me and you.  How about you?  If truth be told, what are you living UNDER?

Are you living under sin and bondage?  Or are you living in freedom under God and His grace?  Bondage has many forms.  Yes, we can be in bondage to obvious sins like addictions to drugs, alcohol, food, tobacco, or sexual immorality.  But also, we could be living under the bondage of something or someone.  Here are a few other things a person can be in bondage UNDER: the law, religion, a church, a leader, a boss, a family member, a friend, a job, debt, a lifestyle, an image, a reputation, social media…the list could go on.

Only Jesus can remove the chains.  He came to set the captives free.  Through Christ, we are no longer living UNDER SIN and law but UNDER GOD and His grace.  Let me encourage you today to live freely UNDER the love, grace and mercy of God.

  1. I love this post! It’s a wonderful reminder. I think a lot of us are living under the stress of the Christmas season right now. I have talked to several friends who are already completely overwhelmed and stressed out with the pressures of buying gifts, baking, etc. I am trying to avoid that pressure this year by taking every thought captive and seeking first and ONLY the kingdom. AND remembering that I am free.
