“Old” is a relative term.  Bill Cosby says that most people think “old” is 15 years older than their current age.  I think it’s funny that Jennifer’s mom refers to the “old folks” living in her active adult community.

When I was a “young pastor” and first started Graystone Church, I didn’t think it was that important to have “old folks” in our church.  Boy was I wrong.  Every church planter/pastor needs “old” people is “his” church.

Here are 8 reasons why I love “old” people at Graystone:

1.  Old people are encouragers.  The people who encourage me the most at Graystone are the “old” people and Julia.  Very few people give me words of encouragement, but I can always count on the “old” folks to say something positive and encouraging.  I’m not sure why this is, but they will go out of their way to say a complimentary word, write a note or send an uplifting email.

2.  Old people are servants.  Some of the greatest servants in the church are people who are retired or empty nesters.  I love to see them humbly investing in the things that last for all eternity. And you know what?  They are fine to serve behind the scenes, so God gets all the glory.

3. Old people are very gracious.  Old people tend to be less critical and extremely gracious to me.  They allow me to make mistakes and be myself.  I’m not sure why this is, but I think the older we get, the more we realize how imperfect we are.  Imperfect people tend to extend more grace to others.  I think “old” people also realize that life is not all about them or their kids.  It’s hard to put this one in words, but “old” people are more gracious and forgiving.

4. Old people are huggers and handshakers.  I’m a hugger, a handshaker and a crier for that matter.  And it means so much to be to get a big ole side hug or a firm handshake on Sunday morning.  ”Younger” people are more apt to “like” a picture or status update on Facebook, but I will take a “real life” hug any day of the week.  This is a side note, but social media is completely changing the way we interact with each other.  And it is not all positive.

5. Old people are wise.  There is no way around it.  The only way to gain experience is by experience.    The longer you have lived, the more experienced you are.  And hopefully, you have learned from your experience. If I have a big decision to make, I like to get wisdom from someone who is an expert in their field, or they have more experience than me.  Now, we can learn from our experiences or the experiences of others.

6.  Old people are mentors.  Everyone needs someone to look up to.  And an “old” person can be a spiritual leader and mentor for a “younger” person.  It is so neat for me to see “older” women being spiritual mothers to our “younger” women.  And our “older” men discipling our “younger” men.

7.  Old people can reach other old people.  Our goal is to DOMINATE our community with the love of Jesus Christ.  Last time I checked, we have a bunch of “old” people living in our community.  God wants to use “old” people to reach their peers.  Like attracts like.  It is much easier for a Sigma Chi fraternity brother to reach another Sigma Chi fraternity brother.  It is much easier for a UGA Football Player to reach another UGA Football Player.  We typically relate best with people who are 5 years within our age.  God is using “old” people to reach other “old” people.

8.  Old people are committed to the vision.  ”Old” people do not come to Graystone because of the loud music.  They do not come to Graystone because of the Children’s Ministry or the Student Ministry.  And they probably do not come to Graystone because of the preaching.  They come to Graystone because they are committed to the vision.  They see that we are committed to reaching our community with the love of Jesus, and they want to be a part of it.  Honestly, many of them try to come up with excuses for not coming to Graystone, but God has called them here to help us reach our vision.  And this is probably the #1 reason I love “old” people at Graystone.  They are not here to have their needs met.  They are here to serve God and build His kingdom!

THANK YOU “OLD” PEOPLE!!!

If you are offended by this blog because you think I am calling you “old”, I am not.  I am referring to the people who are 15 years older than you.  If you are encouraged by this blog, then I am talking about you… whether Joelan thinks you’re “old”, or Jennifer’s mom thinks you’re “old”.

What are your thoughts?  Would you add any reasons to the list?

This summer, Jennifer and I will be hosting a ministry for college age folks (age 18-24).  If you are interested or would like to be involved, please let us know (jennifer@graystonechurch.com).

We will be sharing more info over the next few weeks.

1.  Yesterday, my barber asked if he could trim my eyebrows.  I ask, “What eyebrows?”  Facial hair is not my forte.  Speaking of facial hair, I absolutely love the new show Duck Dynasty.  They make me want to grow a beard and blow things up, which is some of what we will be doing during the Graystone Man Series in June.  BTW, we are having a beard growing contest for Father’s Day.  I have already started letting my preach fuzz loose.

2.  We have one more week in our Hunger Games message series.  If you want to be fed, then this is a good Sunday to be at Graystone.  I’m talking in spiritual terms not actual food.  BTW, I had several sweet rolls this morning.  Sweetness rolled up…does it get any better than that?

3.  As many of you know, we are launching our Beautiful series on Mother’s Day.  I cannot wait to share with the ladies of Graystone how beautiful they are.  As part of the message series, Jennifer will join me on stage during the second week.  She will be sharing about her battle with melanoma skin cancer and the surgery that she had on her face.  It’s still hard to believe that she had 65 stitches from her eye to her chin.  I’m getting a little queasy thinking about it.  Good thing I ate all those sweet rolls this morning to make my stomach feel better.

4.  Since I mentioned Jennifer, let me give you a little update on the family front:

  1. Joelan is 15 years old and got his Instructional Driver’s License (Learner’s Permit) yesterday.  If you see a black Camry heading your way with a good-looking young man peering over the steering wheel, you might want to get as far to the right as you possibly can.
  2. Julia got her hair cut this week and is donating it (the cut off part) to Locks of Love.  She looks even more super cute.  I’m so glad that she has decided NOT to date and will trust me with an arranged marriage.  If any of you have sons that are interested, the “bride price” is set at $2 million.  And this is not the $2 million I am trusting God for Graystone.  This will be my 401k.
  3. Jessie is still wearing her “thumb gloves” and trying to win the battle against thumb-sucking and hair twisting.  I have actually drawn a prayer circle around this on my prayer sheet/Vision Night page.  If God can cause “the sun to stand still”, He can help Jessie overcome this habit.  Your prayers are welcomed and appreciated!

5.  God answered 2 prayer requests that I have been drawing a circle around all year.  This Sunday, I will be introducing the two newest staff members of Graystone Church.  BTW, they both graduated from the University of Georgia.  Go Dawgs!  I offered a job last summer to a graduate of LSU, and he is the only person to ever turn down a job offer from Graystone Church (Actually, this is not entirely true.  Kyle Hale turned me down the first 9 times I asked him to be our Worship Leader.) I guess the Graystone Staff Team is only big enough for one LSU fan?  Anyway, I am so pumped about both of our new staff hires, and I know that God is going to do incredible things in and through their lives.

I am copying and pasting an email from Deb Goodwin.  She is needing volunteers to join the Graystone letter writing team which is part of our Prayer Team.  Let me just say, this ministry is incredibly important.  They have ministered to me on numerous occasions as I have received a note in the mail that they prayed for one of my specific prayer requests.

Please consider joining this ministry team, especially if you have the gift of encouragement.  Also, you do not have to attend Graystone on a regular basis or live in the state of Georgia to serve in this ministry.  So, what are you waiting on the be used by God to minister to someone in a time of need?

Here’s the email from Deb:

Good Morning!

As you all know, our church is really growing….YEAH!…and with the growing process there are more needs and requests for prayer. Therefore, the Prayer Team Ministry is looking for some Volunteers to help us write cards to those on the weekly Prayer Request List. The List is broken down between the number of volunteers we have, as evenly as possible and delegated out to write cards per week to those that have requested prayer. It is always so nice and touching to get a card in the mail whenever our family or a friend of co-worker is going through a difficult time or even if the Prayer Team can share a Praise!

Being a part of the Prayer Team Ministry and writing cards each week has been a rewarding experience for me. We hope that you will pray about it and if the Lord is laying it on your heart to be a part of this Ministry we would love to have you be a part of our team of Volunteers.

If you are interested, please email me, Deb Goodwin dlmgoodwin3817@comcast.net or give me a call 678-772-6312.

Thank you so much for your prayers each and every week!

Deb Goodwin

1 Thessalonians 5:17 “pray without ceasing”

In January during our Old School series, I taught a message titled Living with Financial Margin.  I challenged our church to put God first in our finances.  One of the applications was to test God with the tithe.  He promises that if we tithe, He will throw open the floodgates of heaven with so much blessing that we will not have enough room for it.

Did any of you take the tithing challenge?   Has God blessed your life in some way?  If so, I would love to hear about it.  You can shoot me an email at jonathan@graystonechurch.com.  Thanks.

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.” Malachi 3:10

This week Graystone is sending out 36,000 mailers to the homes closest to our church.  We are inviting our community to a brand new message series, Beautiful, beginning on Mother’s Day, May 13.  Please pray that the mailer would grab people’s attention, and God would use them to bring hundreds of people to Himself.

Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.”  John 6:44

I will share more on the new series and our special Mother’s Day plans in a future post.  But let me just go ahead and say, you definitely want to bring mom and all the females in your life to Graystone on Mother’s Day.  They will absolutely love our new series, Beautiful.

This year we awarded two teams with FREE pizza parties for their participation in Jersey Day.

1.  Coach Dwayne Britt’s, Southern Magic 12U Travel Softball Team, had 11 for 11 players present along with 22 parents plus siblings.  Also, they attended the 12 noon service which is my favorite service. :-)

2. Coach Adam Wilson’s, Michigan Wolverines TBall Baseball Team, had 10 of 11 players present along with 19 parents, a few grandparents plus siblings.

I’m very proud of these coaches and all the other coaches, parents, and team moms who are using the platform God has given them to reach out the their players and friends for Christ.  There are not many things in life that excite me more than seeing kids in jerseys with smiles on their faces at church.  May all of us, Graystone Church, continue to be a city on a hill that cannot be hidden.

In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16
