Today, Jennifer and I are celebrating our 18th wedding anniversary.  It’s so obvious to me that God had the perfect plan in bringing us together.  I’m not sure what song this comes from but “she is my lover and my best friend”.  Jennifer and I do not have a “perfect” marriage, but it is a pretty darn good one.  There are many reasons we are still married after 18 years but here are 7.

7 reasons we are still married after 18 years:

1.  We try to be the first to say, “I’m sorry”.  Fights and disagreements are inevitable.  We apply Ephesians 4:26-27.  Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry and do not give the devil a foothold.  Don’t sweat the small stuff (I.e. pet peeves).  There is no need to start WWIII over an un-replaced toilet paper roll or dirty clothes laying on the floor.  BTW, divorce is not an option.  It never has been and never will be.  We made a covenant with God.

2.  We do not center our family around the kids or their activities.  The kids have never been the CEOs of our family.  Although, I do feel like Jessie, “our grandchild”, may call the shots sometimes.  I’m only joking here.  Our marriage has always been a higher priority than our kids.  Our kids will come and go, but we will stay together for a lifetime.

3.  We always keep the romance “hot”.  The key here is looking to meet your spouse’s needs and not your own.  I don’t think I have to explain His Needs Her Needs.  If you are meeting your spouse’s needs, she/he will have no reason to look elsewhere.  We try to keep the grass green in our own yard.

4. We focus our marriage on Jesus Christ.  If the husband and wife are growing closer to God, they will grow closer to one another.  A cord of 3 strands is not easily broken.  I think Joel Thomas said it great in his message Sunday at Graystone Ozora:  ”A heart not deliberately set on the Lord will settle somewhere else.”  We need to seek the Lord with all of our heart, mind, soul and strength.

5.  We do life together.  Jennifer and I are not living two separate lives.  She really is my best friend.  Sure, I play basketball (BTW, Graystone has the best church basketball team in the universe.) and she goes to the spa with friends.  But most of the time we do stuff together.  We walk.  We meet for lunch.  We watch TV shows together.  We talk.  Actually, “we could talk or not talk all day.”  Sorry, that was a quote from Best in Show, which I wouldn’t recommend watching with your church staff team.

6.  We set proper boundaries.  We are NEVER alone with someone of the opposite sex.  This sounds extreme but it’s not.  If you mess with fire, you will get burned.  Also, we protect our time together.  We protect family time.  We spend most of our evenings together as a family.  Our marriage and family is much more important than our careers.  My family is a higher priority to me than the growth of Graystone Church.  If Graystone doesn’t make the Top 100 Fastest Growing Churches in America list this year, I’m not going to lose any sleep.  I’m married to Jennifer not the church.

7.  The purpose of our marriage is so much more than us growing old together and living happily ever after.  God brought us together to fulfill a great work for Him.  Right now and for the next 12-15 years, He has called us to DOMINATE our community with the love of Jesus Christ.  God’s purpose for our lives is so much bigger than ourselves.  It’s not about us or our happiness.  It is about HIM!

I hope this short list helps you, your marriage and your family.

If you’re looking for someone to take great pictures for a wedding, a special event or your family/kids, I highly recommend 375 Photography.  Justin Wojtczak has been taking pictures for our family for years (Click here to watch a video of our 2011 “photo shoot”.), and we absolutely love them.

Here are some recent pictures  Justin took of our kids:

On Friday night, Jennifer was out of town, and there were several kids over at our house.  Joelan and his buddies went to Waffle House and played basketball in the driveway.  Jessie and I built a fire in the fireplace and had some great father daughter time.  And Julia and Kelsi tapped into their creative sides shooting and editing a video using an iPad app.

Pretty cool.  I love seeing our kids enjoy being kids.  God has blessed them with a great group of friends.

Eric and Mandy McKnight and their oldest child, Jacob, are boarding a plane today and heading to China.  Over the next 2 weeks, they will be rescuing Anna Faith from an orphanage and adopting her into their family.  God called the McKnight to adopt a couple of years ago, and it has been a long process with many challenges and steps of faith along the way.  I am so proud of them for being faithful to do what God has called them to do.  And I have joyful tears in my eyes today knowing that there will be one less child in our world without a home.

Let’s pray for the McKnights over the next two weeks and for God to guide their steps and surround them with a hedge of protection.

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 1:27

Yesterday afternoon after the Falcons kicked the game winning field goal to advance to the NFC Championship Game (Go Falcons!),  Joelan asked me to play tennis with him.  He has tryouts this week for the varsity tennis team at Grayson High School, and  he’s been working hard to get ready.  After we practiced tennis, I told him that we had to do something “spiritual”, because I just shared with Graystone that too much of my time spent with the kids was focused on sports and not spiritual growth.  He laughed.

As we were leaving the tennis court and on our way home, we discussed Psalm 119:9,11.  He and I had memorized these verses together a few years ago, but he had forgotten them.  So, we worked on re-memorizing them.   We also discussed that Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, and it is a chapter about God’s word.  At breakfast this morning before school, Joelan, without my prompting, quoted word-perfect Psalm 119:9. BAM!

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Deuteronomy 6:5-7

Beaver-by-retroplanetdotcom-240x300There are no perfect families, but God wants us heading in the right direction.  Is your family heading down the right path?  It will not happen by accident.  If we go with the flow, our families will drift down the same path as everyone else, and we will find ourselves and our kids caught in the current of our worldly culture.

As Christians, God has called us out of world, and He wants us to live differently.  And it will only happen if we make some hard decisions to live our lives according to God’s design and purpose.  God has a perfect plan that He wants each of our families to follow.  We’ll talk more about it this Sunday at Graystone.  I’m praying for all of our Graystone families.

Dr. Reagin going the extra mile to take care of my eyes

Dr. Reagin testing my eyesight

President Obama’s speech last night was powerful.  I loved hearing him quote Matthew 19:14.  When he was sharing the names of the kids who were killed in Sandy Hook Elementary School, one of the names was Jessie. That really brings it close to home.  As I drove Julia to school this morning, we held hands all the way to LCA.

Well, it’s official.  I am old.  I know have a pair of bifocal glasses.  If you are ever in need of an eye doctor, I highly recommend Dr Richard Reagin.  He met with me several times and went the extra mile to make sure I had the perfect glasses for my needs.  Also, he gave eye exams at The Path Project and was able to provide free glasses for several kids and moms who desperately needed them.  He’s another one of the behind the scenes amazing members that we have at Graystone Church.

Yesterday after church, I decided to build a fire in the fireplace.  BTW, Jessie and I love fires.  I forgot to open the flue and when I came back inside from getting more firewood, the entire house was full of smoke and the smoke alarms were going off.  Now, our entire house smells like smoke.  If you have any suggestions on how to get rid of the smoke smell, I’m all ears.

Elder Single Elimination Ping Pong Tourney

Elders Single Elimination Ping Pong Tournament

We had a great Graystone Elders Christmas Party last week.  Mark Hanley, our “fearless” leaders, picked up Atlanta’s Best Wings and some of the wives sent several incredible desserts.  Thank you.  Also a big thank you to Josh and Megan Clark for opening their beautiful home.  It is an honor to serve Christ with such godly men.  It’s hard to put into words how much each of them means to me.  Also, we had a little ping pong tourney.  I thought it would be both prudent and responsible for me to post the tournament bracket with the results.

KATB, Kyle and the Band, did a tremendous job with the music Sunday, especially “Go Tell It (On the Mountain)”.  If you liked the Christmas music yesterday, you are absolutely going to love our Christmas services at Graystone Church.  It really is one of our best services of the year.  And I appreciate KATB and all of the other folks who are serving our church and sacrificing their time for so many services on Christmas Eve and Christmas Eve Eve.

3 of our Christmas services are FULL (5pm Sunday, 3:30 and 5pm Monday).  PRAISE GOD!  So, we added a 5th service at 2:00pm on Monday, December 24.  If this service time is better for you or if you would be willing to switch to this time, we would greatly appreciate it.  Let’s keep making room for God to move!  Here’s is link to reserve FREE tickets online: Christmas Service Tickets.

And let’s do whatever it takes to “go tell it on the mountain” and DOMINATE our community with the love of God.  THE BEST IS YET TO COME!  Here’s the Operation Yuletide video to inspire you to invite your friends and family to church this Christmas:

Over the weekend, 5 of our Graystone families experienced the loss of a loved one and today (12.12.12) would have been Angel Sailors 17th birthday.  My heart is heavy, and I’m spending the bulk of my day praying for those who desperately need to experience God’s comfort and strength.

Christmas can be a difficult time for those who have had friends and family move on to eternity.  Please say a special prayer today for someone who you know is missing a loved one.  God loves and cares for them.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 35:18

The Howes family was honored to participate in the inaugural flying of The Elf on the Shelf in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade.  We’re so proud of Chanda Bell and all she and her team have accomplished.  It’s obvious that God’s hand in on her life, family and business.

Here are a few pics from the parade, Thanksgiving in New York, and me in an elf costume.  Enjoy.
